‘AQUAMAN’ Makes History By Topping The Billion Dollar Global Box Office

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that DC Universe blockbuster “AQUAMAN” has topped the worldwide billion dollar box office ($1.02 billion US dollars), I mean it was such an awesome film and directed by Asian Australian JAMES WAN. So for that, the news is even better in that regard.

It is interesting because nowadays it seems that the US box office is not as important as how a film performs in the global market and this is the case for “Aquaman”, where the international sales were important in determining the success of the film. Here is more from CNBC on this awesome news:

While “Aquaman” has secured $287 millionin domestic ticket sales, a sum on par with second-tier heroes from Marvel’s slate of superhero films, a staggering 70 percent of its revenueis from international markets. These days, international markets are a huge factor in the success of a Hollywood film. A poor or even middling performance in the U.S. can be erased if foreign moviegoers embrace the film.

More than $732 million of “Aquaman’s” total gross is from countries like China, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Brazil. In China, alone, the film brought in $284 million.

Although, international returns will likely slow in the coming weeks, as “Aquaman” was released two weeks earlier internationally than in the U.S., said Doug Stone, president of Box Office Analyst.

“We expect that ‘Aquaman’ will finish probably around $330 [million] to $350 million [domestically], while the overseas returns will be declining more rapidly as most of the big markets have already seen a large portion of the gross collected,” he said.

This news is really good and it also shows how important the Chinese market is for Hollywood films. China has a huge appetite for superhero films and I think a lot of that goes back to the types of films many Chinese people grew up on where heroes were warriors/ fighters/ flying martial artists. So I would say that more superhero Hollywood films will be heading towards China – the world’s largest market and one which will grow to be the largest in the not so distant future. In any case, I am sure the sequel for “Aquaman” is looking good, so let’s hope that will be just as big of a hit as this first one was.
